This Pride Month, advocate for LGBTQ-inclusive sex ed. Kim Kargman, Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts

Dear Searchingforreason.N,
This Pride Month, the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts is fighting for a world where every LGBTQ young person feels supported, valued, and celebrated. But when it comes to sex ed, LGBTQ youth – and their health needs – are too often left completely out of the conversation.
It’s time we change that here in Massachusetts. It’s time we pass the Healthy Youth Act, state legislation that would ensure if public schools are teaching sex ed, they are teaching inclusive sex ed that recognizes LGBTQ identities.
Sex education and other programs that overlook LGBTQ students, or worse, stigmatize and stereotype them, contribute to unsafe school environments and put our youth at risk. LGBTQ young people need information that addresses their own identities and experiences, so that they have the knowledge and skills to take care of their sexual health, just like their peers. Writer, author, and feminist activist Jaclyn Friedman wrote all about this in The Boston Globe this month.
As we celebrate Pride Month this June, we are determined to stand up, push forward, and listen to the voices of these youth who want and need change in our schools.
As the Trump-Pence administration continues to undermine LGBTQ rights, let’s protect our LGBTQ youth here in the Commonwealth. Thank you!
