"IT IS SAID THAT THE GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT OF ALL, IS TO STAND UPON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS, AND CONTINUE THEIR GOOD WORKS.  IS THIS SO?"

"NO, IT IS THAT IN THE FUTURE,  THERE ARE THOSE WHO SEEK TO STAND UPON YOUR SHOULDERS,  AND CONTINUE YOUR GOOD WORKS."

...Started to raise his hand, bringing it up to his Mouth.

Just before the Older Man was able to Consume the small item, the Young Explorer screamed in Horror, grabbing the hand containing the Morsel of Fungus, and Twisting the Wrist Sharply in a downward motion, forced the release of the Potential Edible.

The Reaction from the Senior Member of the Duo was Immediate.  Stepping Back,  he yelled, "You Dare place your hands on me?  By what possible form of Propriety allows such a thing to occur.  I should have known that you would be no different than the others."  He then turned abruptly, and began to walk out of the Camp.

Although he was Deeply Affected by the Recent Events, and his voice Betrayed His Inner Turmoil, the Young Man responded as best he could.

"I...AH...I Meant no Offense.  It's just that, it could of...well...you know."  His Voice was breaking from Shame and Embarrassment.  However, he did not move to stop the Visitor from leaving.

The Man stopped, Turned around slowly, and while his Facial Expression still seemed to Indicate Displeasure, the Anger Appeared to have disappeared. Walking slowly back over to the Fire, he paused and began to speak.

"You Said, 'It could of'..., Could of What?"  He stopped walking, and stood within arms length of the Youth, his eyes still showing a Look of Reproach.

The Recent Graduate felt a sense of relief, but it only lasted a couple of moments. In Desperation, he Blurted out the Truth, Ignoring the Possible Consequences
"If you had Eaten the Mushroom, your Death would have been certain. I Couldn't let that happen."  He Finished Talking, and pointed to the ground where the Visitor had dropped the Mushroom.

Looking to the Spot where the Youth Indicated, the "Wise Man" walked over and bent down.  He Appeared to pick up an item, and stood up immediately after grasping it.

Holding out his Hand for the Young Man to see what it contained, he said, "What makes you Think Eating this would Harm Me?"

The Explorer looked at what the Visitor was holding, and saw that Instead of the Expected Mushroom, the Hand Contained what appeared to be a Wild Onion, which was quite common, and Harmless.

The Young Man was Stunned, and his Facial Expression Betrayed
the Confusion he felt.  His Mouth started to move, as if he was
Attempting to Speak, but no sound came out.

The Visitor stood silent for a few Moments, as if to give his Host a chance to speak.  When this didn't occur, he smiled slightly, stepped in front of the Younger Man, and held his hand open for Inspection.

The Recent Graduate looked Down at the Open Hand, and Gasped in Astonishment.  There were Two Items sitting in the Palm of the Older Man, the Wild Onion, and the Deadly Mushroom.

He shook his Head in Bewilderment, and said in a Soft Tone, "I Don't Understand. You Dropped the Mushroom, I saw that, but...the Onion?"

"One My Lesser Talents, but at Least I Haven't Lost My Touch."  The Visitor said quickly, while a Throaty Chuckle Issued from His Mouth.

The Young Man again looked down to the contents of Visitors Hand, and said, "I Don't Understand, I saw you about to eat..."

The Visitor Held up his other hand, cutting off the Recent Graduate.  "I'm Sorry for the Deception, but I had to know if you are being sincere."

Suddenly it Dawned on the Youthful Explorer what had happened, and the look of Confusion was replaced by one of Anger.

"You Palmed the Mushroom in your Hand, which already contained the Onion. WHY WOULD YOU DO SUCH A THING?  DOES MAKING FOOLS OF OTHERS MAKE YOU FEEL PROUD AND SUPERIOR?"

"Remember", said the Visitor Patiently, "You came looking for me.  If what you Told Me was a Lie, and just an excuse to go back Home and Relate to Others the Success of being the one to Track me down, I Doubt your Reaction would have been so Sincere and Forceful when you perceived my Life to be in Imminent Danger. Further, it also gives me a Mirror into What You Truly Think about Those who Taught and Instructed You Through the Formative Years, and If I am Truly the One Best Suited to give you the Answers You Seek."

Not Quite Grasping what he was being Told, the Young Explorer continued his
Admonishment of the Visitor.

"Well, Now that you have had Fun at My Expense, am I to expect that this
meeting is at an end?  Will You Return to your Sanctuary at Higher Altitudes,
and leave me to my Fate?"

The Older Man grinned, and shook his Head.  "Maybe, Your not as Perceptive as I Thought.  Tell Me, why did you grab my Hand so Forcefully, and Turn the Wrist with such Violence?  Surely, You must have realized that such an Act Could have caused Me Injury.  What if I had reacted with Equal Hostility, and Struck Back in Self- Defense? You Took a Great Risk, and all for Nothing.  Isn't that right?"

The Words Caught the Explorer off Guard, and for a moment, He was stunned into silence.  The Slight Smirk on the Older Mans Face seemed Incongruous with his Comments, and He Struggled to offer a Answer.  Finally, He Managed to Utter a Response, which came out in a Hoarse Whisper.  "You--ah-Were, if you had Eaten... that Mushroom, it could of...well, Killed You."

"I Told You THAT IT WAS PERFECTLY HARMLESS, DIDN'T I,"  was the Immediate Response, which came out like an Accusation.

"Yes," the Young Man responded, with his Face turned to the Ground.

"YET, YOU DISREGARDED MY JUDGMENT, DID YOU NOT?" was the Rapid
Fire Response.

Feeling Helpless, the Recent Graduate Merely Nodded, and said, "I guess so."

"AM I NOT THE WISE SAGE YOU HAVE BEEN SEEKING.  IT IS SAID MY KNOWLEDGE EXCEEDS ALL, AND IS SECOND TO NONE.  THIS IS THE REASON YOU SOUGHT ME OUT.  YET, WHEN I TOLD YOU THAT THE MUSHROOM WAS HARMLESS, YOUR ACTIONS CLEARLY CONTRADICTED THE JUDGMENT I HAD MADE. ISN'T THIS SO?"

Looking up at His Interrogator , the Youth Answered, "Yes, but I Knew the Mushroom was Poisonous, so I had no choice but to Act the Way I Did."

"SO ACCORDING TO YOU, I WAS WRONG."
