Dear David,

It’s Day Two of Democrats controlling the House. We are already making real progress fixing what’s wrong with our political system.

Last night, I told you about how the House passed THREE of my reforms to strengthen ethics requirements in Congress. This morning, we introduced a new bill to empower the American voter, limit corporate influence, and strengthen ethical standards across the board.

The For The People Act (H.R.1) includes two bills that I introduced in the last Congress. The Automatic Voter Registration Act requires that all states immediately register any eligible voter who provides personal information to their bureau of motor vehicles. It reverses decades of Republican efforts to make it more difficult for minorities, young people, and urban residents to vote.

The DISCLOSE Act shines a light on secret corporate spending that has flooded elections in recent years. It requires organizations spending money in elections – including super PACs and certain nonprofit groups – to disclose donors who have given $10,000 or more during an election cycle.

In addition, the For The People Act will restore the Voting Rights Act, enhance campaign finance oversight, and strengthen enforcement of ethics laws. This bill will pass the House soon. Then, we’re going to keep the pressure on the Senate to send it to the President’s desk.

This is a fight worth having. It is critical that we fix our political system and restore the promise of American democracy.

Warm Regards,

David N. Cicilline
Member of Congress
