What Alabama means for Massachusetts. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund.

“The sponsors of this bill believe that it is time, once again, for the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit [Roe v. Wade], and they believe that this act may bring about the best opportunity for this to occur.” – Alabama Governor Kay Ivey on the state’s new abortion ban.
Last night, Alabama signed into law the most extreme abortion ban since Roe v. Wade, which will outlaw abortion outright and imprison doctors for life. Just this year, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, and Georgia have passed six-week abortion bans—and it’s only May.
There’s a reason these laws are so extreme. President Trump has emboldened anti-abortion politicians in states across the country, from Alabama to Massachusetts. They are spreading misinformation, they are directly challenging Roe v. Wade, and they are attempting to end the established, national right to safe, legal abortion.
We saw this coming on Election Night in 2016. We saw this coming when the Senate confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Here in Massachusetts, we have a responsibility to blaze a trail forward—but we need your help.
Access to abortion is at risk across the country, and Massachusetts still has medically unnecessary, ideological laws that block people from care or force them to travel across state lines. In the face of these national attacks, Massachusetts must remove these politically motivated restrictions, once and for all.
Now more than ever, it’s time to show the rest of the country what true leadership and true reproductive freedom look like. The ROE Act is a bold statement that abortion is health care, and we will not let anti-abortion extremists trample on our rights. But we need to act.
This is our time. We will never back down until all people – from Alabama to Massachusetts – have access to the basic health care they need. We will not be discouraged because we know what’s at stake.
Thank you.
